Our History

The sheltered waters and beautiful surroundings along Brentwood Bay have long been appreciated by those in the region, including the early Malahat and Saanich peoples, who spent their winters here. Non-native settlers began arriving by the end of the 1840s, and the area was eventually adopted as a popular summer destination. By 1916, the inlet was recognized as a sports fishing reserve, becoming a prime location for Victoria anglers. Many Canadian luminaries, including Prime Ministers Pearson and Diefenbaker, Hockey Hall of Famer Gordie Howe, and multiple Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist Oscar Peterson, would all fish here.

The south end of Brentwood Bay (the current location of Anglers Anchorage Marina) featured more attractions geared towards summer visitors. In the 1920’s, Local businessman William Oakes Wallace operated the Anchorage Tea Gardens, a holiday resort with cabins, boat rentals, a grocery store, and a fishing pier. Refreshments were served in the tearoom, and dances took place every Saturday night during the summer. The Anchorage Teahouse was located on what is now the parking lot of Anglers Anchorage Marina. Two documented heritage buildings remain on site: the W.O. Wallace cottage (ca.1925) at 910 Grilse Lane and the cottage of former dock operator William Allen (ca.1920) at 6995 Angler’s Lane.

We express our sincere gratitude to the Peard family for sharing these historical photographs. The Peard family held ownership of Anglers Anchorage Marina during the 1930s to the 1950s.
